Post-Crisis Reconciliation
Sunday, March 9, 2008

As many of you have heard, the two opposing political parties in Kenya have agreed to a plan for reconciliation and power sharing. While getting to that point was a protracted battle, now comes the really hard part of agreeing to the specifics of sharing power between bitter rivals who have each other’s blood on their hands. But, at least the country has come back from the precipice of disaster, with most of the tribal fighting having stopped. Much of the credit for getting this far goes

Kenya in Crisis
Monday, January 14, 2008
Thousands of refugees are camped at Jamhuri Park on the edge of the burned-out Kibera slum that, until a few weeks ago, they called home. Ramshackle dwellings and once-bustling kiosk businesses strewn amidst mud paths have been reduced to smoldering ruins. Neighbors who have watched their kids grow up together can no longer co-exist due to tribal animosities that have flared since Kenya’s rigged election a few weeks ago. Safely Back in Nairobi
Friday, January 4, 2008
Many of you have written over the last few days asking how we’re doing amidst the chaos sparked by Kenya’s recent election. Thank you for thinking of us. We are fine. He’s a shy monkey, so typically only comes around in the very early hours. In his boldest move to date, he tiptoed into the bedroom past a snoozing Dave and into the living room, only to find a very startled friend of ours. She screamed and jumped onto the kitchen counter. Initially not knowing what had befallen our friend, and then spotting the dark hairy

Mt. Kenya
Monday, October 8, 2007
We decided to hike part-way up Mt. Kenya in advance of a full expedition to the summit sometime in the future. Our friend Kaarli and a guide named Boniface joined Stephanie and me for the three-day trip. We were hoping to get up to the second camp, which is about a day shy of the summit, depending on how fast you climb.

We set off on a Saturday morning for the beautiful three-hour drive up to the Central Highlands and the Laikipia Plateau. We reached the trailhead by about 11am and
